Junction Arts Festival 2010 Call To Artists out 5 months earlier than last year... why?

[caption id="attachment_5791" align="aligncenter" width="490" caption="Footprint of the festival -  September 8 to 12, 2010 with a two-day street closure of Dundas Street West, September 11 and 12. "]junction arts festival footprint[/caption]

The more time an artist has to create, make, develop and plan even mull over a work of art the greater the depth and the value to the viewer can be. The festival board wants to begin working with artists earlier, provide acceptance of work into the festival, so artists can plan and execute works on a longer term.

Full disclosure: me Robert the author of this post is a board member of JFAC the entity that creates the festival  with the local JBIA

---------------------

The Junction Arts Festival is now accepting creative proposals for the 2010 Junction Arts Festival. The Festival runs from September 8 to 12, 2010 with a two-day street closure of Dundas Street West, September 11 and 12.

The festival is  currently accepting proposals only from performance-based artists and art installation works of any combination, including but not limited to, Indoor and Outdoor Installation Artists, Street Dance and Theatre groups as well as any multi-arts ideas that we may be able to support. Our emphasis in 2010 will be for large scale outdoor work but we are accepting all proposals. Fees will be determined on a per-artist-basis.

Additional calls for Visual Artists, Poets and Musicians will be forthcoming in the next few months.

Approximately 200,000 people attend the festival each year, experiencing interactive works that both engage and enthrall.

Proposals should include the following:

- Artist or group contact info  - Bio and history  - Example of past work

- Video and/or photo examples of proposed work. If proposing a new work, please include a description, plus technical requirements

If proposing a new work please be as specific as your present process allows at this time. Also inform us if you are applying for any creative funding from other sources. If applications for government funding precede any agreement between artist and festival, then a letter of intent may be issued on our part.

The Junction Arts Festival has been running its present programming since 2007, but the festival’s history dates back to 1991, with the street closure since 2000. ‘Where the Arts meet the Street’ is the basis for this ever-growing multi-arts Festival that includes visual art, galleries, installation art, main stage music, dance, theatre, performance art, travelling minstrels and anything in between and beyond.

Toronto, National and International applications accepted.  - All inquiries should be directed to Festival Director, Michael Menegon via email atjunctionartsfest@bellnet.ca

Application packages should be sent to:

  1. Is it going east of Keele this year like the map suggests?

  2. Hi A.R.

Right now the festival board and the JBIA include the area east of Keele St as part of the festival and retailers from "across the way" have participated every year. We spend much time discussing the Keele St physical break and are working on solutions right now. City, insurance and safety issues all need to be resolved, but to end the Keele St physical break is a goal.

  3. 5 months early...? I know why, with enough notice, they might actually have a decent number of artists taking part in this year's festival. Every other year the calls come out far too late. Instead of art, artists, and performers the neighbourhood is inundated with tacky crafts, cheap clothing, and fast food stands. Good to see the "art" getting put back into the Junction Arts Festival!

  4. Good luck with that, Head Pounding :) Do you honestly believe that there is an audience for art in the Junction? I think visitors are looking for a good street festival so that they can eat drink and entertain their kids. Plus, is JFAC capable of running an Arts Festival?

  5. Hi Kneel, in my humble opinion being a decades professional artist, it seems arts is not about audience nor want and need but about individual perception of life.

  6. Very philosophical, junctioneer. If the businesses are the main sponsors of the event, I'm sure they are not doing so more because they like the activity and business it brings to the street than a love of art.

  7. That I agree with.

  8. Shame you couldn't have used the new "Sarc Mark" to denote your sarcasm on that one Kneel!

So back again to the question of expanding the festival... does that really make sense? Last year and the year before, I remember there were some areas that were VERY sparse... From Quebec to Clendenan there was almost nothing. I would l like to see more kids' areas, some years ago this was a more dominant feature but seems to have been missing the past few years. Let's see some really great areas for kids to get involved in art!

  10. Hello T. Pye,

Just to let you know the Junction Arts Festival is developing some new methods this year for the festival, they will be placing up a new site explaining most if not all of this in the new week or so, the new site will 1st be a intro site and as the plan progresses materials will be added. One of the best areas in the coming weeks will be to follow the festival blog. (which is also currently being worked on.)

Oh, and to the question about you're being late, no you are not, and i have added you name to the mailing list.

In the mean time simply send a few image of the work you do and a short paragraph about yourself and your work to applications@junctionartsfestival.com

and to assure that all this is correct, I and the chair of the the Junction Arts Festival.

if you have other questions I can be reached by email at roberthilts@junctionartsfestival.com

    I also do this blog

  11. Just a quick question as a former contributor to the festival - why was the board of directors so completely changed for this year? Anyone know?

    ReplyDelete
  12. The board has changed but all the former board members are still involved, and they had been worked 10's of hours per week to see the festival runs, for 5 years, now the new board gets to work all though hours.

Disclosure, the author of this reply is the chair of new board and runs this blog.

    question answered?

  13. Headshake, people burn out. And if they don't burn out the BIA sees that they do through overt and covert methods of slandering, insulting, defaming, blackmailing, humiliating and ridiculing the volunteers who dedicate much time & energy to the operation of the festival.

Congrats to the BIA for a job well done, I'm you're all patting each others back on that one. :P
