Canadian federal governmentto spend $15 million to save a tree-planting programme in Ontario

THE Canadian federal government has pledged to spend $15 million over the next four years to save a tree-planting programme in Ontario, which was cancelled amid various other budget cuts by Premier Doug Ford's government. The money is coming from Ottawa's $420 million low-carbon economy fund, which was announced last year as a way to bypass the province and give money directly to institutions after Ontario cancelled a cap-and-trade system and various green programmes that were funded by it. Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna said the 50 million trees programme is an important part of fighting climate change. She commented: "Planting trees means cleaner air, it means cleaner water, it means more habitat for animals
