People were removed the furniture, and just plain junk that is in one of houses on this now development site. Yet why not place all this directly in the dumpster?

61, 63 and 67 Vine were sold recently and reader SP has just sent in this update with information on what currently in the works for the site and his opinion of the state of affairs that will occur with this change.

The row of shanty houses on Vine that were recently sold.  The two leaning houses and the one that was on fire last year have all been boarded up and some men who were cleaning up the
property recently said that the structures would be torn down and 6 townhomes going up in their place.  That only leaves 2 shanty houses to go.  The residents of Vine are happy to welcome this change to what has been an eyesore for many years now.  Our street will look nicer and the riff raff that hung out in these abandoned houses will hopefully be replaced by families both young and old.  Sadly the brick house could not be saved but there are a lot of other structures in the area that have been restored in recent months and I hope that is enough to please the naysayers of development.

61, 63 and 67 Vine were sold on June 12th at 100 percent of list price which is $800,000 total, this has been reported by two readers John U. and the another who has told the blog to refer to him as a reader a while ago.

As a recap for people who may not know, these three houses were much abused for many years (decades) by the owners, which greatly affected the avenue and the community. Many people were very happy to see them go up for sale, and a lot of people want to see new houses built on the site.

Yet there may be the loss of 67 a wonderful built home of a particular character  that exhibits a great deal of the historical fabric, which appeared on so few houses in the Junction – two examples on this house the slate roof and the detailed eves  which have more ornamentation than most houses in the Junction.

It is probably safe? to say that a series of new house will be built on the site,  which will be good for the avenue, in that they will bring more people to  live in the area, and will provide a fresh atmosphere. Or there could even be live/work units built.

The problem with the sale of 67 Vine Ave

The sale of 67 Vine and the two houses next door to it to the east which are all owned by Niazi Holdings Inc and have been for ever so long, solves many problems for the east end of  Vine Ave, among them these pointed out commenter J.U. on April 4th of this year...

The people that own 67 Vine also own the other 4 derelict houses on Vine. 2 of the houses are attached and leaning/falling over badly, the third has a tenant but is in extremely poor repair and the 4th has been boarded up since the 60’s. How is it that a house can remain vacant for 48 years?

The sale of 83 feet on frontage may attract the attention of small infill developer with the interest of building 4 to 5 and may six - if they squeeze -  new townhouses on the site.  The new homes would be a welcome addition, but with one caveat ...the saving of 67 Vine ave itself, a house virtually untouched by Home depot renovation  materials at least on it's exterior. The house has a wonderful slate roof and most of what must be original creative exterior woodwork, all of which should be respected and restorted.

So maybe an enlightened infill developer can built his  new houses and leave the great one that alreday there?

67 Vine Ave - City Contacted About Latest Mess

The Toronto Municipal Licensing and Standards Division (TMLSD) has been advised of the garbage piling up in front of this house.    It is part of their scope "to ensure properties are maintained at standards that stall the decay of neighborhoods and increase the quality of life in the City".

You can search the status of any complaint against a property in the TMLSD's search engine. This specific complaint is not registering, yet.

The Mess Never Gets Better

There was light at the end of the tunnel when a crew and dumpster showed up to clear the garbage piling up in the back from a potential squatter throwing it out the backdoor, after a concerned citizen called the city.  But, romour has it, that this new pile of garbage is the owner's solution to keeping people from parking in the driveway.  Since this photo was taken yesterday, the pile is already bigger from other people adding to it.

We are currently compiling a list of the properties owned by this neglectful holdings company.  Any info would be welcome.

67 Vine Ave finally attended to after fire of May 30 2008

Friday April 3rd    

It is 308 days or 10 months, 4 days from the fire date to the 1st day of interior cleanup, at this property. Recently homeless people have moved in and proably moved out today as workers entered the house to remove fire debris.

This was simply too long for the owner to suffer the community.

67 Vine Ave fire

Today, the house in yesterday's post about an unkempt house on Vine Ave, was gutted by a fire.  Some of the fire department personel commented to neighbours that the house will have to be torn down. No one was hurt in the fire, and hopefully they found a place to go to.

Architecturally, this is a lovely house; the only one in the Junction, it seems, with a very old slate roof. It is also one of few houses with a facade, pretty much as when the house was first built. This is rare in the Junction, so you may want to take a look now. 71 Vine ave, just west of Keele St.

Buildings such as this one on Vine Avenue are in the worst cases becoming a fire hazards, unsafe for those living in them, or a haven for drug dealers, and in general reducing property values. Abandoned and unkept buildings can be a problem that greatly impacts all of the people living near them. It appears no work is done on maintaining this house other than standing in front of the house, waiting for prospective renters, who obviously would live somewhere else if they could afford it. Shouldn't they be provided with a basic standard?
