Volunteers for 2011 Junction Arts Festival



 



 

The Junction Arts Festival is looking for enthusiastic and friendly individuals to volunteer their time to help make this year’s festival a great success.  Volunteers need to be able to commit to at least one 5 hour shift during the weekend of September 10 -11, 2011.  Volunteers are an integral part of the festival and we must be able to rely on your commitment.  If you would like to be a part of event please download the PDF below and fillit out  then e-mail this application to info@junctionartsfest.com

Everyone can contribute their time, skills and knowledge through volunteeing, and their combined efforts can be a significant force for achieving  this years goal of making the festival a community owed event.

Environmental Experience

Experience the wonderful sensation of walking on timber, bark, mulch, pebbles, wood and mud. Feel the cool waters of the brook, the foot bath and the sun baked rocks, the softness of the grass and soil, enlarging the landscape through nature, architecture and infrastructure, manipulating and blurring perceptions of what is natural and what is artificial.

Poetry Village & Twilight Film Center

Heart and Art, a fluid Live Literature installation from Lillian Allen, is one of the center pieces of Junction Arts Festival 2010. Heart and Art will takeover/makeover a vacant lot into a Poetry Village a living breathing poem or book. We will create the world’s first, Installation of a live Poetry Village with stages, hubs, a giant screen, and an atmosphere to synergize creativity. Between daybreak and sunset, poets, writers, readers, lovers of the word and community members will collaboratively program, inhabit vibrate and empower togetherness within the 2010 Junction Poetry Village.

The Poetry Village is a post-postmodern, multi-media, multi-platform, remix art installation that deals with location, process, and interactivity, building community and empowering the word. As part of this installation, poets, writers, readers, performers, lovers of the word, etc, are invited to co-create activities that will bring our ‘poetry village’ alive. In a community of words and poetics, the community is invited to take in the power of words to enliven and empower! Listen to some fabulous readings, or try your hand at writing a poem or two. Interact with poets and writers from all poetry and writing styles. Get poetic advice or join a group workshop. Vote for your favourite Slam poets and see the champions face off! Learn all about dub poetry.

This is part of a multi-media, multi-platform exploration, so along with on-the -ground experience, we will also be creating a “virtual poetry village” providing prompts and writing exercises to inspire ‘virtual villagers on-line’ as well as local villagers to write their own poetry and travel along the geography of the festival to explore

RE: INVASION - Recent Crimes and Punishments

Monuments / Plunderworks / Mash-Media / Shinyism / Lebensraum / Subvertainment

Opening reception/performance Thursday, Sept 9, 7 - 11pm

Performance and media-artist Istvan Kantor invades the premises of SMASH and turns the junkyard size vintage furniture store, located in the heart of the Junction, into his own Neoist (s)mash-up art headquarters. The industrial store-set is a perfect drill-ground for Kantor’s hyper-audacious strategy, techno-cinematic vision and his conflicting taste for mayhem. The show will open with a new performance, designed and created for this occasion, involving members of Istvan Kantor’s robo-zombie MachineSexActionGroup.

For the Junction Arts Festival Kantor extends his installation/performance to the street with a monumental construction of a barricade made of hundreds of old file cabinets in front of SMASH on Saturday, sept 11. Kantor will also actively engage himself with other projects at different sites of the festival, such as a Neoist Brainwash Station and a speed-drawing blitzkunst-action. He will be available to meet festival visitors for informal conversations throughout the JAF event.

Scotiabank - A Childs Experience,

Arts, education and some well organized adventure take to the grounds for the child and family alike. From Juno Award winners to a complete environmental experience - children and families will have the opportunity to work together and experience activities with each other in the purposefully designed, programmed and curated children’s portion of the festival.

Some of this year’s A Childs Experience programming includes:

Whatz up with Broccoli. – Play with Poetry.

A program for young people using poetry and visual arts. It will grace this year’s Festival in the Children’s Area and spill out onto the street.

Young people will be motivated into self expression through writing, word-play, and sounding off! They will be guided to use the spoken and written word to create their own works of poetry and word art. Visiting artists to the children area will include poets, writers and storytellers such as Lillian Allen, Robert Priest, Brenda MacIntyre, Klyde Broox, featured storyteller Phyllis Walker and more.

Whatz up with Broccoli – Play with Poetry.- is presented by the Imagine Group led by Vitra Gosine, and Keli Liu.

The Imagine Group is fresh from completing a resoundingly successful six week “Play With Poetry” Writing program at the Albert Campbell Library.

Little Fingers Music - Live and Workshops

Jam with charlie and dancer Rosanna as the perform interactive songs. Their set includes: singing chanting, percussion, flash cards, props, hats, wigs and masks and a variety of dances that will keep the mosh pit moving. Their music gets children engaged and instils a deeper appreciation of music, the environment and multiculturalism. Drop by, tune in and hang out with Children’s Rock Artist and Ontario Arts Council “Arts Educator” charlie as he performs songs from his latest album.

Junction Business Improvement Assoc moves in with Junction Arts Festival

You may have noticed the strange state of the  Junction Business Improvement Assoc offices next to Delight Choc. these past few days.

All the ruckus is caused by their move in the Junction Forum for Art and Culture offices ( the Non profit that runs the yearly festival)  at 2968 Dundas St West Ste:306.

Junction Arts Festival - will feature an ecumenical prayer service

The Junction arts festival which seeks to serve the community and installs a huge stage for the festival weekend has worked to provide our main stage to the communities churches on the morning of Sept 12.

After informing Bill Saundercook's office about the the service he wrote this on his Facebook page, and I thought I could not write it better, so here is his take on the service...

The Junction Arts Festival taking place in Sept 8 though 12 in the Junction/High Park will feature an ecumenical prayer service. Churches and places of worship are an integral part of our communities. As such, the churches and temples within and around the festival footprint will play an important part in this year's event. For festival updates, please see www.junctionartsfest.com.

Junction BIA and Junction Arts Festival participate

The Canada Day Community Picnic takes place at:

High Park, 1:00-4:00pm on Thursday July 1, 2010.

Junction Arts Festival 2010 Call To Artists out 5 months earlier than last year... why?

The more time an artist has to create, make, develop and plan even mull over a work of art the greater the depth and the value to the viewer can be. The festival board wants to begin working with artists earlier, provide acceptance of work into the festival, so artists can plan and execute works on a longer term.

Our emphasis in 2010 will be for large scale outdoor work but we are accepting all proposals. Fees will be determined on a per-artist-basis.

Approximately 200,000 people attend the festival each year, experiencing interactive works that both engage and enthrall.

If proposing a new work please be as specific as your present process allows at this time. Also inform us if you are applying for any creative funding from other sources. Junction Houses Continue to Sell

There were actually multiple offers for this newly renovated house at Vine and Pacific, proving that the Junction is still a hot spot.  The agent did well to schedule the open house during the Junction Arts Festival.  The house has been in constant reno status since it was bought, and the sellers made a good investment.  It just kind of sucks for the proud buyers when they have their photo taken with the 'Sold' sign and it also says 'Over Asking'.

Dunking Dignitaries for Art at the Arts festival this weekend

why not ?

Dunking Dignitaries just doesn't go far enough in the simple opinion of this post author.

It would be alot more fun to dunk various "involved types" in the Junction with Neil Ross providing the comedic commentary. Although comment  for the elected members would pale  with the batter  that will fly with their constituents.

West Toronto Paint and Wallpaper will be the site of an exercise in watery democracy at the Junction Arts Festival on Saturday Sept. 12 , 11am-4pm at the company’s Dundas and Pacific location (2975 Dundas Street West.)

Splash a politician or a local luminary into the drink to beautify the Junction and support young artists.

Proceeds go the Junction Residents Association, who with the West Toronto Junction Historical Society and Boom Times Cabaret are producing Boom Times Spring Fling in 2010.

B00M TIMES SPRING FLING

This project will employ professional artists to work with Junction students to create original art and theatre based on Junction history for display and performance next June.   The program will enhance a greater sense of Junction identity and provide creative positive outlets for local youth, as leave lasting artistic monuments in visual art, theatre, and music.

West Toronto Paint and Wallpaper is celebrating the 100^th anniversary of this unique Junction family business, which has served and beautified the Junction since 1909.

Junction Arts Festival opening lastnight

The image above is a pre peak at the juried art at the festival in the Academy of Realist Art (ARA). The open fest of the festival is tonight at the train station at Pacific and Dundas St West.

Also, could please highlight the Official Opening of the Festival and Reception/Party taking place on Wed, Sept 9th at 7 pm at the Junction City Square, the The mayor may be attending this event as well with Bill Saundercook Ward 13 Parkdale-High Park Councillor.

The festival runs for five days; from opening night celebrations on Wednesday, September 9 (09/09/09) to closing day on Sunday, September 13, along Dundas Street West, from Keele Street to Quebec Avenue.

Lisa Pijuan-Nomura is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Toronto. She has performed theatre, dance, comedy, song and puppetry in Canada, Czech Republic, Austria, Mexico, and Ireland for the past 12 years. She is currently focused on combining storytelling, dance, sound and visual art to create dynamic performance pieces.

Project Associate – Junction Arts Festival 2009

The Junction Forum for Art and Culture is looking to hire an individual to assist in the administration and coordination of the Junction Arts Festival taking place September 9 to 13, 2009.  The successful applicant must be available from June 15 to September 18, 2009.


The Junction Arts Festival is one of Toronto’s largest and fastest growing multi-arts Festivals.  Since 2007 the festival has attracted over 200,000 visitors over the 5 day event.  Street art and artists form the core of the creative experience that houses an artist market, live music, site specific dance, theatre and comedy as well as installations, indoor galleries and a Juried Art Exhibit.  New this year is a literary element that will increase the artistic participation and add to the flavor of the street.


This position offers creative input, flexiblity, and provides a gratifying experience that supports both the arts and the community.  The successful applicant will assist directly with the Creative Director and will be required to offer input and feedback in many planning aspects of the festival.  The successful applicant must be available to work throughout the 5 day period of the festival with various supervision and hands-on coordination.   This is a project-based position.
